Day 12: The trip home from QLD

Sunday 14th May, Coonabarabran to Narrandera


Today is Mothers Day! (Happy Mothers Day Noeline).  The morning has once again become very chilly and both Felix and Frosty (our trusty hot water bottles) have been pressed into service.  Our plan was to get to Narrandera (approximately 550km) for our overnight stay and meet up with the Heatheringtons.

Obviously this shire is the talk of the Newell Highway - the marketing dept needs to rethink this one!


Had missed the rain for most of the day - but it is not looking good!

Rain continued to threaten but we managed to avoid.... most of it
Noeline catches a great shot of us approaching the rain storm - the hare is not so sure!!

The rain did eventually catch us - but only briefly much to Maritta's relief.
We made it to Narrandera ...in spite of a flat tyre on the Eagle and having to open the points a bit when it started to run a bit rough.  We stopped to change the point block to a spare once at the motel in Narrandera.
We meet up with the Heatheringtons and enjoyed a lovely Mothers Day meal at the Motel Restaurant - the McDougalls, McKinnons and Parsells.
Clouds made for a spectacular sunset though.

Day 9: 2017 National Rally - Warwick to Clifton

Thursday 11th May, Steam train to Clifton Today is a driving free day! Gives the drivers a chance to relax and enjoy the scenery.   The morning was quite sunny - so hoping for a good day weather wise.  After breakfast the bus picked us up at the motel at 9 am and took us to the Warwick railway station.  Here we boarded a lovely 1956 Steam train and our destination was Clifton. The loco was built in Maryborough, Queensland, so is a true local.   A bit like Maritta - it tends to take a while to get going in the morning! Shunting the carriages Had to shunt a long way back and change lines to get to the platform. Once we boarded the trip to Clifton took about 2 hours with a couple of short stops, first to obtain permission to proceed, and second to turn the loco as it can’t be turned around at Clifton (or Warwick for that matter).  It is a lovely train ride and staffed by volunteers. Day 1 Rally to the Rally + 2017 Alvis National Rally - Queensland

Day 1   Wednesday   4th May It was reported as being one of the coldest May day in Melbourne on record and was only 5 ℃ in Avonsleigh at 9:30am when after much cajoling I managed to coax the Alvis to life.  It was not happy!! Whilst Maritta did a few errands my job was to squeezed the luggage on board.  In the end I had to leave the tripod behind).  We headed off at about 12:30 pm . Very pleasant drive through Woori Yallock, Yarra Glen and Yea to Seymour and then on via the Shepparton bi-pass to our first overnight stop in Tocumwal.  We stopped just past Shepparton to check we had enough fuel. Our merry little band all arrived safely however Chris Higgins's Firebird failed to start and he was forced to bring the modern....not a very happy chappy!!  The Tonkin team (Richard and daughter Sarah) arrived last a little after dark.  We had a very pleasant meal at the golf course bistro which was quite busy for a Wednesday night. Day 5 : Rally to the Rally

Day 5: Sunday 7th May: Moree to Warwick This morning we rose - excitement in the air - today we arrive in Warwick for the start of the 2017 National Rally. Alvi from across Australia converge for our biennial get together - meeting friends and fellow enthusiasts.  Leaving Moree - sunny but cold! A big morning - we packed up quickly and headed into town to get breakfast at the local cafe.  Then off to  Thulimbah, about 400km away. Cold and fresh ...and NO Trucks.....it was lovely motoring.  Maritta and Noeline were very grateful to have Frosty and Felix topped up and spent the morning snugged up in the warmth of our hot water bottles. Impressive narrow iron bridge just outside Moree.  We took a detour off the highway from Texas, the road was pretty rough in places but was a great drive and kept us away from the trucks.    We came across a huge "swarm" of what looked like birds but were in fact bats A closer view of the large fruit bats on the move.
