Day 3 Rally to the Rally



Day 3 : Friday 5t h May

Another cold morning and "Frosty" and "Felix" our trusty hot water bottles are filled up for another day on the road. 
Our Alvi are packed up - almost ready to hit the road again.....
Think we've moved to Easter Island?
At Parkes - Just waiting for every one
 After breakfast we leave Forbes and continued up the Newell Highway to Parkes.  This is the home of the “DISH” - the famous radio telescope responsible for bringing the World live pictures from the 1969 Moon landing and Neil Armstrong's moon walk.  Did a self guided tour around the Visitors Centre then took in the “3D” movies - it was most informative.


The moment cannot be missed - we lined the cars up for a photo op with the dish in the background.

We once again hit the road and move on via  Dubbo.  The trucks are a real issue - they are huge and in a hurry so we opt for a bypass through Mendooran stopping for lunch and a distillery tour at the Black Gate Distillery, a delightful boutique establishment run by a very friendly couple and their dog ...Frankie the cutest and friendliest miniature dachshund.  Would highly recommended this visit to all.

Following a lovely lunch , tour and general natter we are off again heading for Coonabarabran - our next overnight stop. The weather is starting to pick up and get a little warmer...yay!

Sunday 14th May, Coonabarabran to Narrandera Today is Mothers Day! (Happy Mothers Day Noeline).  The morning has once again become very chilly and both Felix and Frosty (our trusty hot water bottles) have been pressed into service.  Our plan was to get to Narrandera (approximately 550km) for our overnight stay and meet up with the Heatheringtons.  Silhouette of Eagle in the crisp morning sunlight. Obviously this shire is the talk of the Newell Highway - the marketing dept needs to rethink this one! Had missed the rain for most of the day - but it is not looking good! Rain continued to threaten but we managed to avoid.... most of it Noeline catches a great shot of us approaching the rain storm - the hare is not so sure!! The rain did eventually catch us - but only briefly much to Maritta's relief. Day 13: The trip home from QLD

Monday 15th May, Narrandera to home Decided on an early start this morning as we want to get home today.  Parsells and McKinnons left  Narrandera at just before 7am heading for home, a distance of around 500km.  It was freezing!! Even Frosty had trouble being warm.  We head across the Hay Plains - fog was about and the sun  couldn't break through.  We stopped for breakfast at Jerrilderie where the local truck tyre shop put a new tube tyre in my tyre, this was just as well as the one we repaired at Connabarabran went down near Seymour. The fog and mist made for a picturesque landscape on the Hay Plains Typical rural scene Left Alan and Noeline at Seymour as they headed to Melbourne down the Hume and we turned off through Seymour and Yea to home. Overall we travelled 3154 Km and our fuel consumption was 13.9L/100Km (in spite of the car running very badly for a couple of hundred kilometres on day 12). GPS said we had a top speed of 101km...

Day 1 Rally to the Rally + 2017 Alvis National Rally - Queensland

Day 1   Wednesday   4th May It was reported as being one of the coldest May day in Melbourne on record and was only 5 ℃ in Avonsleigh at 9:30am when after much cajoling I managed to coax the Alvis to life.  It was not happy!! Whilst Maritta did a few errands my job was to squeezed the luggage on board.  In the end I had to leave the tripod behind).  We headed off at about 12:30 pm . Very pleasant drive through Woori Yallock, Yarra Glen and Yea to Seymour and then on via the Shepparton bi-pass to our first overnight stop in Tocumwal.  We stopped just past Shepparton to check we had enough fuel. Our merry little band all arrived safely however Chris Higgins's Firebird failed to start and he was forced to bring the modern....not a very happy chappy!!  The Tonkin team (Richard and daughter Sarah) arrived last a little after dark.  We had a very pleasant meal at the golf course bistro which was quite busy for a Wednesday night.
