Day 3 Rally to the Rally



Day 3 : Friday 5t h May

Another cold morning and "Frosty" and "Felix" our trusty hot water bottles are filled up for another day on the road. 
Our Alvi are packed up - almost ready to hit the road again.....
Think we've moved to Easter Island?
At Parkes - Just waiting for every one
 After breakfast we leave Forbes and continued up the Newell Highway to Parkes.  This is the home of the “DISH” - the famous radio telescope responsible for bringing the World live pictures from the 1969 Moon landing and Neil Armstrong's moon walk.  Did a self guided tour around the Visitors Centre then took in the “3D” movies - it was most informative.


The moment cannot be missed - we lined the cars up for a photo op with the dish in the background.

We once again hit the road and move on via  Dubbo.  The trucks are a real issue - they are huge and in a hurry so we opt for a bypass through Mendooran stopping for lunch and a distillery tour at the Black Gate Distillery, a delightful boutique establishment run by a very friendly couple and their dog ...Frankie the cutest and friendliest miniature dachshund.  Would highly recommended this visit to all.

Following a lovely lunch , tour and general natter we are off again heading for Coonabarabran - our next overnight stop. The weather is starting to pick up and get a little warmer...yay!

Day 9: 2017 National Rally - Warwick to Clifton

Thursday 11th May, Steam train to Clifton Today is a driving free day! Gives the drivers a chance to relax and enjoy the scenery.   The morning was quite sunny - so hoping for a good day weather wise.  After breakfast the bus picked us up at the motel at 9 am and took us to the Warwick railway station.  Here we boarded a lovely 1956 Steam train and our destination was Clifton. The loco was built in Maryborough, Queensland, so is a true local.   A bit like Maritta - it tends to take a while to get going in the morning! Shunting the carriages Had to shunt a long way back and change lines to get to the platform. Once we boarded the trip to Clifton took about 2 hours with a couple of short stops, first to obtain permission to proceed, and second to turn the loco as it can’t be turned around at Clifton (or Warwick for that matter).  It is a lovely train ride and staffed by volunteers. Day 5 : Rally to the Rally

Day 5: Sunday 7th May: Moree to Warwick This morning we rose - excitement in the air - today we arrive in Warwick for the start of the 2017 National Rally. Alvi from across Australia converge for our biennial get together - meeting friends and fellow enthusiasts.  Leaving Moree - sunny but cold! A big morning - we packed up quickly and headed into town to get breakfast at the local cafe.  Then off to  Thulimbah, about 400km away. Cold and fresh ...and NO Trucks.....it was lovely motoring.  Maritta and Noeline were very grateful to have Frosty and Felix topped up and spent the morning snugged up in the warmth of our hot water bottles. Impressive narrow iron bridge just outside Moree.  We took a detour off the highway from Texas, the road was pretty rough in places but was a great drive and kept us away from the trucks.    We came across a huge "swarm" of what looked like birds but were in fact bats A closer view of the large fruit bats on the move.

Day 8 , 2017 National Rally - Around Warwick

Day 8: Wednesday 10th May - Around Warwick The day started out gloomy again but fortunately no rain.  Another quieter day with not a lot of driving planned.  We visited some very interesting local places. First stop was a private collection of horse drawn vehicles, some superbly restored, others in very original but good condition. Everything from small sulkies and vans (Butcher's and Milkman's vans) to a Cobb & Co coach and an enormous waggon.  Located in a large purpose built shed shed down an long steep sweeping driveway in an unassuming suburban street - it is amazing what treasures people have hidden away. Amazing detail in the decoration An Australian built sleigh Timber work under this enormous dray is quite amazing The collection was many and varied. Some cars braved the driveway but stayed near the house. And the view across the valley is most impressive Others continued down the drive parking near the shed. Natura
